Lonely Planet review for Hiking

The surrounding hills are equally good for hiking. One option is to hike up to the only remaining part of the original town wall, by West Gate. It takes around one hour. There are three paths up, meaning you can complete a round trip. One starts beside the stream by Lánzhōu Niúròumiàn Muslim restaurant. Another leads up the hill from the post office, while a third is accessed via Guānyīn Gé temple. It's also possible to hike for about two hours to Shàngníbā Monastery in the eastern hills.
