Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

I'm currently in Dunhuang and due to head into Xinjiang for about 10 days or so from the 22nd, heading towards Kashgar. I was wondering if anyone was around and might be interested in sharing some transport costs, as I'm travelling solo and it is starting to get very expensive!

We will be in Qufu mid August and want to do a day trip to climb the Taishan mountain. I'm wondering should we do it by train or would bus or taxi be a better option?

I plan to travel to western Sichuan from the 1st of August to the 14th, through Litang, etc. My friend, who lives in Chengdu tells me that there have been reports of some destructive flooding in the region. Does anyone who's travelled through the region recently have stories of the difficulties they encountered?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to visit Sichuan soon and was excited to read that there are Tibetan communities near the border with Tibet. I would really like to visit them. However, the lonely planet China says that access to them by foreigners can be denied at any time. I have a short amount of time and cannot go all the way to the west only to be denied access. Are there Tibetan towns that are rarely closed to outsiders? Is there a site that can tell me what is closed or not? Is there any tours…

My flight arrives at 4:25am at PEK and I want to head straight to Datong via bus/train. I would like to take the shuttle from the airport to close to either the bus/train station and then go right away. I was worried about buying a train ticket prior in case our flight is delayed. Can anybody suggest best way? I read taking shuttle bus 4 from airport to Gongzhufen which starts at 6am and then make way to Liuliqiao Long Distance Bus station but I have not been able to confirm the time table from…

We will travel from Datong to the Hanging Monastery and then continue to Wutai Shan. After visiting the monastery we will go to the Hunyuan Coach Station and catch the bus on to Wutai Shan. However have our big backpacks. We don't know where we can leave them and we don't want to return to Datong. Does anybody know if we can leave them at the Hunyuan Coach Station or at the entrance to the Hanging Monastery or a local business who will watch them? Any suggestions? If anybody has an email/phone…

Hey everyone. I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I am trying to plan my trip and I fail to understand how visas work in general. I do enjoy hitchhiking and other ways of budget traveling, but I have never been out of Europe visa-free zone. As far as I understand, to acquire Chinese visa one must provide itinerary. I would like to enter on land from Kazakhstan. The part with booking a hotel and cancelling it as soon as you get visa is very clear, however, I don't understand how…
