This combination teahouse, opera theatre and cinema is one of the more centrally located. High-standard Sìchuān opera performances are given every Saturday and/or Sunday afternoon, though the teahouse itself often has performances.

One of the most popular places at the time of research, Hemp House has pool tables and plays everything from house to reggae. The best time to come is Saturday nights when it becomes a dancing free for all.

Shǔfēng Yǎyùn Teahouse
Located in Culture Park, this large teahouse puts on excellent shows that include music, puppetry, comedy, Sìchuān opera and the province's famed face-changing performances. Shows run nightly from 8pm to 9.30pm. If you come at around 7.30pm you can watch performers putting on their make-up. Kids might like to have their own faces painted (from Y100).

Old Little Bar
Reportedly set up by China's rock legend Cui Jian, this is Chéngdū's most established rock bar. It no longer has live performances – go to New Little Bar for that – but still a cool place to hang out with music-loving locals.

North Sìchuān Shadow Puppetry
Informal but fun 20-minute performances of north Sìchuān shadow puppetry are held in the small open-air courtyard here. They need at least four people for the show to start. It's a couple of doors down from Lǐ Family Courtyard.

New Little Bar
This small pub-like venue is the place in Chéngdū to catch local bands performing live. Bands play every Friday and Saturday, and occasionally on weekdays, usually from 8pm. Live music carries a cover charge of around Y30, depending on who's playing. Check expat magazine Chengdoo for monthly line-ups.

One of Chéngdū's most pleasant and popular spots to while away an afternoon over a bottomless cup of flower tea. The tea menu is in English. Having your ears cleaned (Y20) is optional.

This excellent bookstore-cafe, with branches in Běijīng and Sūzhōu, is a peaceful spot for a drink or a coffee. It often hosts author talks, concerts and other events. Check its website for a schedule.
