    Built into the cliffs overlooking the Jialing, this massive complex is a Disney version of the tumbledown houses that once stood in its place. If you have just a day to try local food and pick up souvenirs, it's a fun place to wander around. The handicraft stalls are on the 3rd floor, and food is on the 4th.

    Dropenling

    Wander through the Tibetan old town to this excellent new initiative established by the Tibet Artisans' Fund to support local handicrafts. Quality and prices are top end, and well worth a look as you can watch local craftspeople at work on site.

    Mani Thangka Arts

    Opposite the Shangbala Hotel, Mani Thangka Arts features thangkas made with mineral paints by local artist Phurbu Tsering. Most of the other thangka shops are owned by Chinese traders who sell Nepali imports.

  4. Wong Kong Oil Painting and Art Plaza

    Near the entrance to Dafen Village, this is the founding shop of this mass production painting kingdom. Bus 106 from Luohu takes you to the village in an hour's ride. A taxi ride costs around Y40 to Y60.

    You can find silk embroidery, ceramics, fans and other traditional crafts in this government run store. Bargaining isn't an option here.
