Lonely Planet review for Xīntiāndì

Xīntiāndì hasn’t even been around for a decade yet and already it’s a Shànghǎi icon. An upscale entertainment complex modelled on traditional alleyway (lòngtáng) homes, this was the first development in the city to prove that historic architecture does, in fact, have economic value. Elsewhere that might sound like a no-brainer, but in 21st-century China, which is head-over-heels for the bulldozer, it came as quite a revelation. Well-heeled shoppers and al fresco diners keep the place busy until late, and if you’re looking for a memorable meal or a browse through some of Shànghǎi’s more fashionable boutiques, you’re in the right place. The heart of the complex, divided into a pedestrianised north and south block, consists of largely rebuilt traditional shíkùmén houses, brought bang up-to-date with a stylish modern spin. But while the layout suggests a flavour of yesteryear, you should not expect much in the cultural realm. Xīntiāndì doesn’t deliver any of the lived-in charm of the Taikang Road Art Centre or the creaking, rickety simplicity of the Old Town. Beyond two worthwhile sights – the Shikumen Open House Museum and the Site of the 1st National Congress of the CCP – it’s best for strolling the prettified alleyways and enjoying a summer evening over drinks or a meal. Pick up an orientation map at the Shanghai Information Centre for International Visitors (Xīntiāndì South Block, Bldg 2) on Xingye Rd.

    Old buildings, new stores

    natekeegan recommends this,

This is a busy place during the weekends so it's probably best to come during the week. To sum it up, Xintiandi is like a tiny old town filled with highend shops and back alleys as well as photogenic spots completely surrounded by the massive skyscrapers and a huge mall. Either come here to shop, or come for the photo shoot.
