Among the first and largest department stores in Asia...
rlmiller recommends this,
In a controversial move, my wife's grandfather insisted on building a modern, Art Deco high-rise using a Chinese architect... the recent restoration (not including the wooden escalator, I think) suggests he chose well. He and three friends learned the department store business in Australia, returned home to found the four major stores cited above, and prospered until the Communist era, when several relocated to Hong Kong.
