Lonely Planet review for Dishuidong
Named after a cave at Mao Zedong's birthplace, this Hunan eatery's low-key rustic charms are matched by an invigorating menu. Xiāngcài (Hunan cuisine) is all about searing spice, but don't reach for the dry ice yet, dishes are quite tame. The spicy bean curd (麻辣豆腐; around Y18) hits the mark; flesh out the meal with the Stewed Pork in Sauce of Chairman Mao's Style (毛公红烧肉; Y28).

Good for vegetarians, if a little greasy
cesekberry recommends this,
Personally, as a vegetarian, this is the best meal I have had in Shanghai, in fact in China, so far. There were three or four exciting looking tofu dishes on the menu and plenty of vegetables dishes, although some have meat in so look carefully at the pictures if you are wishing to avoid the meat.
The surroundings are rustic and busy, with imported beers and very nice wines on the menu.
The meat eaters I was with found their dishes very fatty and greasy, wishing they had avoided pork and noodles because the rice and chicken dishes were much nicer. My thinly sliced tofu in chilli even won them over, being everyone's favourite dish.
I would definitely visit again.

hot, spicy, utterly fulfilling
bhandicott recommends this,
Depending on your hometown, the choice of Chinese cuisine is often Cantonese inspired. A little Szechuan perhaps. Shanghainese even. But Hunanese cuisine is relatively thin on the ground. If you don't make it to Hunan province, at least make this restaurant top of your eating destinations in Shanghai.
Dishuidong is eye-opening, both for its tastiness as well as its very different style to the more popular branches of Chinese cuisine. It will baffle you with its use of spices, pickled wild chillies, cilantro, so unlike the gloopier dishes from the south of China, and Shanghai itself. And as the home of Mao, it would be shameful not to enjoy Mao's Meat, a slow-braised pork dish rich and deep in flavour.
Good for: lovers of food experiences, chilli lovers, food lovers, flavour raiders
Not good for: chilli intolerants
