Arugula
Located in a garish, orange-coloured three-storey house in an alley off West Fuxing Rd, this restaurant is a cosy place for lunch or to while away an afternoon. The menu mixes Mediterranean flavours – the house special Arugula Canard Salad (Y48) features slices of duck breast with cherry tomatoes and an orange dressing – with more hearty dishes, such as pasta (from Y45), lamb chops and steaks (Y110). There’s a strong cocktail menu (from Y45) and it’s an excellent spot for long, lazy weekend brunches. Reserve.

M on the Bund
The first to pitch up on the waterfront in the closing years of the last millennium, Michelle Garnaut’s winning M on the Bund restaurant remains as crisp as its white linen. The food is Continental (crispy suckling pig, magret de canard), complemented by a gorgeous art-deco interior and 7th-floor terrace. Reserve.

A Future Perfect
A hang-out for hip grammarians and those who miss the cafes back home, A Future Perfect relies on fresh ingredients to keep the menu enticing throughout the day. Try the Strammer Max breakfast (two eggs on chive-buttered farmer’s bread; Y48), one of the superb salads (from Y48), the veal piccata and gnocchi with caper-lemon butter (Y188) or a simple blue-cheese burger (Y98). There’s a fair amount of attitude floating around this place, but that’s all part of the vibe. It’s inside the Old House Inn.
