Lonely Planet review
Largely luring business clientele from East Asia, the four-star Seagull is small enough to be intimate while enjoying a prime roost north of Suzhou Creek and gazing out onto Shànghǎi's classic vistas - Waibaidu Bridge, the Bund and Lujiazui.
Its lobby - a gaudy blitz of gold, marble and nouveau sofas - may lack finesse and the salmon-pink stone exterior is unfortunate, but staff is welcoming. Rooms on top floors have been restored to a high standard, but others look rather worn, with chipped furniture. Staying at the 128-room Seagull is about its central location and the panoramic views: come nightfall you'll be staring out the window (unless you landed one of the without-a-view doubles). For dining with a scenic dimension, the hotel has a decent open-air restaurant overlooking the Huangpu River. Discounts here typically bring the price of a standard room down to a more attractive level.
