A comfortable but rather unspectacular choice, the 26-storey Crowne Plaza has a pleasant location near tree-lined and historic Xinhua Road - formerly Amherst Road - although the hotel is stranded between the French Concession and Hongqiao.
Making it to the hotel by any means other than taxi is a chore, but once you get here you are rewarded by spacious, recently refurbished rooms and good discounts. Dining options - provided by Chinese and Italian restaurants - are not particularly strong and you may have to travel a fair way to find a good restaurant. The hotel has a typical sports bar for live broadcasts while the gift shops in the lobby stocks a wide range of newspapers and also a fine selection of traditional Chinese postcards. The location is the main drawback - this part of town is far from ideal for sights, drinking or dining, but generous discounts draw in a regular business crowd. Ask at the desk for what's showing at the Shanghai Film Art Centre just down the road on the corner with Xinhua Rd. Schedules for the cinema next door are posted inside the hotel.
