    Nam 1975

    Debates rage over whether Shànghǎi will ever have an authentic Vietnamese restaurant, but unless you’re a serious connoisseur, you’ll probably find Nam to be a first-rate choice. Large bowls (Y39) of pho (rice noodles) and bun (vermicelli noodles) are the stars, though for an extra Y35, why not sample some of the spring rolls too? It’s lost down an alley off Middle Huaihai Rd.

    Qing

    Time seems to stand still at this place, which resembles a street-side bistro in Hanoi. Blocked out from traffic, the outdoor tables offer an ambience increasingly hard to come by in hyperactive Hong Kong. Go light with the Vietnamese-style rice paper rolls or indulge in a steak smothered with Roquefort - it's all up to you, and the wine is always fab.

    Saigon Pho

    In terms of price performance, this modest eatery makes some of the best pho (bowl small/medium/large $32/$36/$42) in town, with tender beef in broth fragrant with herbs, and a bottomless side of chilli peppers the way we like it. The Vietnamese curries come with buttered baguette straight out of the oven.

    Bon Appetit

    Cheap but tasty dishes for those who prefer to blow their cash on drinks are available at this Vietnamese and Thai nook in Wing Wah Lane, the northern extension of Lan Kwai Fong. Filled baguettes, and rice and noodles are generally around $50.

    Golden Bull

    The crowds don’t come for the portions (small) and the prices (high), but for the pleasant decor and the tasty Vietnamese and fusion food. The beef pho ($98) and spring rolls ($58) are excellently made, even if not 100% authentic.

    Slick décor, slightly snobby staff and beautifully presented Vietnamese food make for a memorable meal. There's a lovely lakeside view and a fantastic variety of lemongrass dishes and pho soups. English menu available.

    This very stylish though somewhat cramped Vietnamese eatery, down an unnamed alleyway between Peel and Aberdeen Sts, serves refined (some might say overly so) Vietnamese food to the denizens of Soho.

    Lantau residents have been coming for years to this modest joint for its excellent Vietnamese-style noodles flavoured with lemongrass. They’re best consumed with ice-cold bottled Coke.

    This little place is the 'anchor' Vietnamese restaurant on a street with more than a few of those eateries. Set lunches with soup are a snip at around HK$37.
