For the best Thai fare in Guǎngzhōu, head to this bizarrely named restaurant on Shāmiàn. The menu boasts the most extensive choices of curries and the desserts are superb.

Kowloon City Thai Restaurants
Kai Tak airport may have shut down in 1998, but the neighbourhood of Kowloon City to the northeast of Tsim Sha Tsui is still worth a journey. This is Hong Kong's Thai quarter, and the area's restaurants are the place for a tom yum and green-curry fix. Kowloon City, packed with herbalists, jewellers, tea merchants and bird shops, is worth a postprandial look around.
One of the most authentic Thai restaurants in the area, Friendship Thai Food (2382 8671; 38 Kai Tak Rd; dishes around HK$32-138; ;10:30-15:00 & 18:00-24:30) is always full of Thai domestics. Golden Orchid Thai (2716 1269, 2383 3076; 12 Lung Kong Rd; dishes around HK$35-65; ;noon-01:00) is slightly more expensiv…

Little Face
Little Face is a daring fusion of what were once two separate restaurants (Lan Na Thai and Hazara). With other cuisines it could be a slightly schizophrenic experience, but the Thai-Indian combination works: you can pair samosas (Y40) with a green curry (Y75) or papaya salad (Y45) with Tandoori lamb kebabs (Y80) and flavours are mostly complementary. Ochre-coloured walls, candle-lit tables and a collection of Asian antiques set the scene for intimate dining. Stop off at the trendy 2nd-floor bar for drinks.

Purple Haze
The trendiest and most congenial Thai restaurant in town, Purple Haze offers Thai standards such as tom yum soup (Y58), red and green curry (Y46), and tangy, spicy salads – a house speciality – in a mellow, if slightly alarming purple-hued environment. The small, nonsmoking area at the front of the restaurant makes a good coffee stop (with wi-fi) during the day. There’s another branch further east. Book ahead at weekends.

L16
The Thai food here is not the most authentic - a jaded palate might even find the tom yum and pomelo salad lacking in heat - but it's the location and the sophistication that will get you through the door. Besides, there is another restaurant inside this restaurant. A branch of Zen, an upscale Cantonese restaurant whose Admiralty flagship draws quite a crowd, takes up the inner space. Soya marinated chicken would be highly recommended.

Coconut Paradise
Coconut Paradise is a tropical delight, its lush garden seating and dimly lit interior making for a decidedly romantic venue. Curries (Y68), fish salads and Chiang Mai soup will bring back memories of days spent lazing around in northern Thailand, and by the end of the meal on a good night, you might even forget you’re in Shànghǎi. No MSG. Reserve.

Thai Shing
If you want the best Thai food on Hong Kong Island and you couldn't care less about eating off a Formica tabletop and being assaulted by cheesy Thai pop, this is where you should be. The folks here won't give you top-notch service either, but once that delicious tom kha gai, padthai and kaeng hit the table, nothing else matters.

Thai Taste
For a cheap meal in the Superbrand Mall, Thai Taste is a step above the rest of the food-court restaurants. Dishes such as tom kah gai (coconut, lemongrass and chicken soup) and green curry (Y20) may be small, but they are served with rice and carry enough chilli and lemongrass to bring back memories of sweaty meals in Thailand.

Serve the People
It has been around a while, but Serve the People is still Běijīng's best Thai restaurant. You'll find all the classics here, red chicken curry, tom yum goong, as well as superb fish cakes with plum and chilli sauce. It's the warm atmosphere and central location that attracts the crowds though.

Chedi
This attractive restaurant, with warm backlit walls and tiny courtyard, serves some of the most authentic Thai food in upbeat, stylish surrounds. There are heaps of choices for vegetarians and - unusual for an Southeast Asian restaurant - the wine list is excellent.

Chung Shing Thai Restaurant
This chaotic open-air restaurant holds the secret to making perfect grilled meats. The pork neck, beef cubes (both $58) and eel skewer ($60) are among the best in town. Most other dishes, though still decent, have been tweaked to suit local palates.

Thai Lemongrass
This quiet, discreet and very smart place serves up such treats as pomelo salad, spicy green papaya salad and mussels in red curry. It is Thai food with a lot of style and a price to match, but it is worth the bucks.
