    Make your way to Amagao and let the chef heal you if you are sick of flash eateries and crying out for a good honest meal. Located down a side alley off Rua da Cunha, this 10-seat family style Macanese restaurant is probably the best in Macau. The fabulously flavourful Portuguese chicken (MOP$98) is exceptional.

    This gem hidden in a quiet corner off Queen’s Rd East cooks up the best Portuguese fare in town. Classics such as the oxtail stew ($158) and baked duck rice ($110) evolved from heirloom recipes of the Portuguese-Chinese owners. Hearty fare cooked from the heart. Book early.

    Riquexó

    This unpretentious eatery near the reservoir is one of the best kept secrets among the local Macanese community. Choices are sparse, but its homemade Macanese dishes like feijodo (pork with black beans) and minchi, as well as its flan, deserve a thumbs-up.

    The wonderful Macanese chef Henri Wong is the soul of this 34-year-old institution. Mr Wong expertly prepares Macanese specialities like African chicken and Macau sole with a unique recipe. The Sai Van Lake setting is superb.
