Dumpling restaurants in China

  1. Din Tai Fung

    No one has a bad word to say about Din Tai Fung's fabulous dumplings. The xiǎolóngbāo (小笼包; steamed Shanghai dumplings) and steamed shrimp and pork dumplings (xiāròu zhēngjiǎo) are delectable, as are the moreish shāomài. The restaurant is located in the south of town.

  2. Lǎobiān Dumplings

    Shěnyáng's most famous restaurant has been packing in the locals since 1829, and they continue to flock here for the fine dumplings. But the soups are equally impressive. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the Lǎobiān Hotel.

  3. Piāoxiāng Xiǎoshídiàn

    This Chiu Chow snack specialist is always a local favourite. Try the O luah, as well as different types of Chiu Chow dumplings, steamed or pan-fried. If your Chinese isn't up to it, let your fingers do the talking.

  4. Shuānglóng Jiǎozi Wáng

    There's a wide selection of jiǎozi (饺子; dumplings), as well as the usual Dōngběi classics. As you turn left off Taiping, Jie Shuānglóng is the big glass building on the right. There's an English sign out front and a partial picture menu to help you order.

  5. Sun River Dumpling Restaurant

    Need a break from chewing chillis? If so, then try this big, bustling place that specialises in the far less fiery cuisine of northern China. Dumplings (jiǎozi) are the house speciality, and there are seemingly endless varieties, including vegie options, on offer. The picture menu has many other dishes to choose from too.

  6. Xīshèngyuán

    Crowds pay and gather near the entrance to wait for the steaming fresh xǐaolóng bāo (小龙包; soup dumplings; Y6) to come out of the kitchen. If you don't want to jostle, grab a seat and order several other great dishes including assorted húntūn (馄饨; dumplings; Y6 to Y10).

  7. Dōngfāng Jiǎozi Wáng

    Dàolǐqū District (51 Zhongyang Dajie); train station area (72 Hongjun Jie) It's not just the cheap jiǎozi (饺子; dumplings) that are good at this always busy chain: there are plenty of tasty vegie dishes, too, and excellent fresh fruit drinks. The Hongjun Jie branch is a 10-minute walk southeast of the train station, next to the Overseas Chinese Hotel down the alley. Both branches have English menus if you can get the staff to understand you want one.

    Bǎiwèi Dumpling Restaurant

    This pocket-sized restaurant in an alley just off Yiren Lu is a dumpling lover's heaven. The minimum order is 20 pieces (Y0.30 to Y0.40 per piece). English menu now available.

    Dūyīchù

    Recently reopened, this celebrated lǎozihào (established restaurant) located on Qianmen Dajie – finished in grey brick and serenaded with traditional Chinese music – is famed for its shāomài dumplings, although service is rather slow. Try the lamb shāomài (Y38) or the shrimp and leek shāomài (Y36) and pay up front.
