Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

These are my plans:
Dec 4th - arrive in Beijing
Dec 5th - Beijing

Dec 7th - Beijing
Dec 8th - Beijing
Dec 10th - Leave a little bit before midnight by train to…

I would like to do some cycling around Sanya. I prefer the trafic-free cycling-routes and trough nature.
Could anybody give me some advice about this.

Hello, perhaps you are in HKG where Travelex ATM's are situated.

If i use my USD bank debit card, to withdraw USD are there any charges, fees, etc of any type?

Facts / situation:
1. Travelex ATM's in airports (Dubai, HKG, etc) dispense USD.
2. I have a USD bank account/debit card from a USA bank.

3. i do NOT WANT the local currency (AED, HK$, etc) because i am not staying locally AND i do not want to incur fees for (a) first taking cash in local currency (b) secondly, fees for foreign…

My destination is Vietnam. My best fare from the U.S. is roundtrip to Hong Kong. Once I visit Hong Kong for 3 days, I have booked roundtrip Hong Kong to Hanoi on Jetstar through Orbitz for a very reasonable fare. Is that a good plan? Reliability issues? I researched same idea through Bravofly, and found MANY complaints. I am thinking Jetstar through Orbitz is better. My biggest concern is the return flight back to Hong Kong to catch return flight to U.S.

We are traveling from Ottawa, Canada to Hong Kong (with layovers in Chicago and Shanghai), however our final destination is Bangkok. Our flight is supposed to arrive in Hong Kong at 7:15 pm from Shanghai flying on Dragonair, our other flights are on United Airlines. Ideally, we would want to fly to Bangkok on the same day. There is a flight scheduled to depart at 9:35 pm and land in Bangkok at 11:20 pm on Thai AirAsia. We would be booking this flight separately. Would a layover of 2 hours and 20…
