I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww…
As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.
It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.
For starters, Leshan has consistently been…
Hi, I found a dirt-cheap china-eastern-run flight to bring me from Frankfurt to Bangkok (and back...hopefully;-). On my way to Asia, I woul have 2 hours to change the plane (ok), on my way home it would be ecactly 24 hours. So if I arrive short after midnight at Shanghai International Airport and have 24 hours:
-can I catch that nightbus to people square? (I found out the train doesn´t run at nighttime and the bus only "45 minutes after the last flight"....but I have no clue what time that is and…
I'm finishing an Intrepid tour in Xi'an on 6 Sept (Beijing, Chengde, Jinshanling, Datong, Pingyao, Lijiashan, Yan'an and Xi'an), and flying out of Shanghai Pudong Airport in the evening of the 8th. The overnight trains from Xi'an leave in the late afternoon, leaving me more time than I need, but I'm sure I can find somewhere to just chill for half a day!
My question is, this leaves me 2ish days in Shanghai. From what I can tell, Shanghai isn't a super interesting city, and I can probably…
Could someone please tell me whether the fees for a Chinese visa are dramatically higher than noted in the lonely planet guide and online?
Lonely planet states that you can get a 30 day visa including admin fee for £65 but the link suggested states the only visa you can get is a 2 year visa costing £175.
We are a family of 4 travelling to China and Hong Kong in August 2016 for 17 days.
If this is the case could anyone recommend a processing agency that accepts a credit card payment.
I was wondering if you can help.
My girlfriend and I are currently in Beijing and are flying out of Hong Kong a week on Sunday (10 Jul). We are currently in Beijing and plan to be here until this Saturday/Sunday 2/3 July.
That will give us approximately 1 week to get back to Hong Kong in order to catch out flight back home.
We are a couple in our early 30s who have done plenty of travelling, enjoy food/culture/wildlife/outdoors, and general adventure.
So far we have spent 3 weeks in…
I will be arriving in Beijing on Thursday. I'm part of a particular internship program and we are staying in a specific apartment. I have been informed that as part of police registration, we have to give the reception our passports for 1 day. Does it sound dodgy? I know police registration is a requirement for all foreigners but from my earlier experience in China, it's done at checkin immediately. I plan to NOT give my passport in any circumstance - am I being paranoid? Is it common for…
Hello guys, I've travelled South East Asia a lot but haven't been to China too much. I'm curious how much is a simple ensuite (private bathroom included) room in different parts of China for a night? To give an example in Thailand or Cambodia they cost approximately 15 usd if aircon and 10 usd if a fan only room. Is it easy to find such rooms in China? and are there any differences in how they work compared to South East Asia? I.e. check in times, etc?
I am currently living in China and will be leaving in a few months. I live in Tianjin in the North East of China but before I go I was hoping to take a few days to travel to see some of China's wildlife.
From my research I have found Panda sanctuaries near Chengdu but not much else. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other activities possible for animal lovers to experience China's wildlife.
Preferably in the North of China, but I am willing to move around.
I have a long layover in Beijing , almost entire day from 5 AM to 8 PM at Beijing, and I plan on visiting Great Wall at Mutianyu and then around downtown ( like Tienanmen Square, forbidden garden). Would love to have someone to have fun for a day. Anyone interested?
