Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

Hello all,

In November my friend and I are going on a six day tour of North Korea. We're flying from London to Beijing where we'll spend one night before going to NK by train, so we don't qualify for the transit visa. Paying £175 for a visa (I live in the outskirts of London but don't have the spare time to get over to the visa centre, so we'd need the postal service) for one night is a little gut-wrenching (we qualify for the transit visa when we leave).

After some searching, I found that…

Hi there,
My friend David and I will be arriving in Kashgar on Sun 16 Oct 2016 and stay for 3-4 days.
We would be interested to join a 2-3 days English/Mandarin speaking tour to visit places below:
Tashkurgan, Karakul Lake, Karakoram highway, Khunjerab Pass, staying in a yurt and a feel of the
Uyghur culture.
I am holding a Chinese Home visit permit from Hongkong and I can speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English
whereas my friend David is a English speaking only from Australia.

Please kindly…

Ni Hao !
Im planning my travels for 2017 and very very high up on my list are 3-5 weeks in china, in march and/or april.

I have spent 9 months (on 4 trips) in China. I've been to Beijing, Shanghai, Heilongjiang, Shaanxi, Hong Kong, Macao, Yunnan, Gansu, Ningxia, Nei Menggu, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Qinghai and Tibet. I enjoyed every place I've been to, for different reasons, but if I had to choose my favourite places, it would probably be Tibetan areas outside of Tibet (like Xiahe, Langmusi and…

Hi All, I received a category M visa previously for some work I conducted in China (the visa is multiple entry and doesn't expire for a number of years). I have already done the visit that I originally received the visa for and now I'm curious if I can use this visa for tourist purposes. If I were to take a trip to China and present this visa (while only having plans for vacation) would this be viewed as acceptable by immigration or would they expect that I have a separate tourist visa? Thanks…

For my day trip to HK, I will need a MTR round trip ticket from HKG to Central and probably a MTR one day pass as well, right? For those who did not see my prior post,I have a full day layover in HK and want to maximize what I see.

Also, how many HK$ will I need? Can I pay for things via credit card, or is it like the rest of China where cash is needed? Also, any idea if I can pay for MTR via credit card?

I have a long layover in HK...6 AM until 10 PM. My next flight is at HKG to travel international to Myanmar. I want to make the most out of my HK layover. Any suggestions on what to see? Is it a good idea to take the tram and see Victoria Peak first thing in the morning, or would I be better served to see a market at first?

Also, how crowded is the tram to VP around 5 PM? If I have time, I would like to see it in the evening too. If it is crowded, could I walk down and if so how long is…
