It’s come to our attention that there’s an error in the Beijing city guide. (We printed the map from page 291 on page 293.)
We’ve fixed the ebook and the digital chapters, but if you’ve bought a copy of the book already you can get a corrected copy of pages 292 and 293 here.
Until recently, it was relatively easy to get a Chinese visa. The situation has changed beginning about mid March and it is expected to remain unstable until well after the Olympics.
It is now impossible to get a 6 or 12 month multiple entry business visa.
It is now impossible to get entries longer than 30 days.
In many embassies and consulates it would appear impossible to get a double entry tourist visa.
It has been reported that beginning July, it may be difficult to impossible to get…
Does anyone know what transport options there are for getting to the Zhoukoudian Peking Man site? I know roughly where it is and approximately how long it should take to get there but not how one gets there. I assume that there must be a bus. If so, where does it leave from and how often does it run/what would it cost?
Alternatively; what do people think would be a fair price for a taxi? It's about 55kms, according to Google, and takes about an hour. Add, say, an hour or 2 walking around…
Back from a 4 day Beijing trip I want to share my update review.
- Great Wall Experience off the Beaten Track and only 45minutes drive from Beijing.
- Fantastic the new China National Museum, now the biggest Museum of the World with an impressive architecture (opposite of Tianamen Square).
- The old Hutong around Drum & Bell Tower, Lama and Konfuzius Tempele was for me the best location to stay, it’s becoming hip among the locals but still very authentic. Cheap and great eateries around for…
We are considering a Yangzi river cruise in February with New Century Cruise Lines (recommended by Lonely Planet). However, when communicating with a tour company to book the cruise they informed us that it could be cancelled due to low water or not enough passengers on the cruise. Has anyone done a cruise with New Century (or another cruise line) that could give us advice on whether we should gamble and book the cruise anyway, or if it is likely that it would be cancelled. Also, does…
What to do in long December evenings in a hotel in Baar, Switzerland: the Riesling prepared, Birdy’s Young Blood in the radio. So here is the last part of our adventure in Xingjian:
The bus from Yinning to Urumqi does not follow the G218 over Tian Shan but goes north via the G312 - hello again to Sayram. Here you can see another function of the fences: they just stop the flood of plastic bottles and prevent them to go all the way to Urumqi. The road follows the southern border of the…
I'm planning 8 days in Yunnan next week. It's my first trip in this region and considering my time constraints, I've decided to focus on (a small part) North of Yunnan. I'll be traveling from Shanghai to Kunming so below is my current plan:Day 1: Landing in Kunming airport at 11:45am, don't plan to stay in Kunming so straight to west bus station in direction for Dali (4 hours). Overnight in Dali. => Heard that there is direct bus from Airport to West Station (express shuttle…

I'm going to visit Shanghai in late January for 2 full days, before moving to Hong Kong.
What you can advise to see/try? 2 full days are enough?
It's easy to walk through the city?
