Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

I will stay in a guesthouse at Yangjiajie because all the hostels (Bajie and Zhongtian/Yuanjiajie) that are recommended in LP has been closed within the National park (Actually, I got an e-mail from Zhongtian Youth Hostel in Zhangjiajie town and they told me that all other accomodations are also closed down within the park) .

So, I decided to stay in Yangjiajie. I was wondering if I could get from Yangjiajie entrance via the cable car, and by electric bus to the "Grand Sightseeing Platform"…

Right now I try to find out, how I can reach Zhenfeng, coming from Kunming. The G-train from Kunming stops at different stations on its way to Guiyang and beyond. For me the following stations could be of interest: Pan, Guanling, Anshun or Guiyang. According to the map Guanling is the closest station, but Pan and Anshun are close too and offer different and maybe better roads, which connet to Zhenfeng. Guiyang only could be an option, because from there there is the higway S50, which is probably…

We're lucky enough to have 2 weeks in China. We know that this won't nearly be enough to explore much of the country, so we've decided to keep it to the following:
Beijing (including trip to Wall & Terracotta Army)
Shanghai
Hangzhou
Hong Kong

How many days per town would you recommend and should we add/remove anything?
We're leaning towards trains versus flights but also open to recommendations.

Thank you peace & love!

Since the new south railway station for high speed trains ist quite new, there is not so much information available, how to move from the airport to the train station both efficient and not to expensive (then I could take a taxi without asking). I assume, that it is the best, to try to catch the subway line Nr. 1. Unfortunately line nr. 6 doesn't connect with line Nr. 1 already. So would it be best, to take a shuttle bus to Kunming railway station and change to subway line nr. 1 or would there…

Hello, currently in Lhasa. ATM card problem and I urgently need to call my bank in the US. There's a bank number that accepts international collect calls but I have no idea how to make a collect call. Well, I found an international operator number but I can't get it to work. Any ideas?
Alternatively, can I easily buy phone cards in Lhasa to call internationally? If so, where? What are they called? Chinese characters or pinyin appreciated.
Thank you in advance!!

Hello fellow travellers,

Do you have any recommendations about accommodation in Beijing? I will be there for 2-3 nights so I guess I need a place close to the sightseeings. Thank you!
