Lonely Planet review for Wuhan University
Wuhan University was founded in 1913. The university was the site of the 1967 'Wuhan Incident' - a protracted battle during the Cultural Revolution, where machine gun nests were built on top of the library and supply tunnels were dug through the hill.

Cherry blossom trees at Wuda
maria9898 recommends this,
If you're in Wuhan during the spring, the Wuhan University (Wuda) campus is famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees (somewhat controversial since they were originally planted by the Japanese during the occupation), which bloom for 2-3 weeks sometime in late March to early April. The university charges a small entrance fee to the campus (I think 10 rmb) while the cherry blossom trees are in bloom, but it's definitely worth it to check them out. Or, if you want to escape the crowds, the botanical garden on the far side of East Lake also has beautiful flowers in the spring, and is a welcome break from the crowds and pollution of the city.
