Lonely Planet review for Ocean Park

Despite the arrival of its shiny, new Disneyland competitor on Lantau, Ocean Park remains the best theme park in Hong Kong and continues to add rides, attractions, infrastructure, hotels and square footage. The investment in revamping its rides and attractions is already working. Visitor numbers have been soaring, thanks in part to the presence of four giant pandas and four very rare and very cute red pandas, all gifts from the mainland.

As well as excellent animal attractions and enclosures with some worthwhile educational content, the park also offers plenty of white-knuckle thrill rides, such as the celebrated roller coaster called the Dragon and the Abyss ‘turbo drop’. In Marine Land you’ll find sea lions and seals, daily dolphin and killer-whale shows, and aquariums. The Atoll Reef is particularly impressive, with over 2000 fish representing 200 species in residence. Bird-watchers are also catered for with aviaries, a flamingo pond and the Amazing Birds Theatre, with regular aerial shows. The park is divided into two main sections. The main entrance is on the Waterfront (lowland) side and is linked to the main section on the Summit (headland), where most of the attractions are found, by a scenic cable car. The headland section affords beautiful views of the South China Sea. At the rear entrance, where a giant escalator will bring you down to Tai Shue Wan and Shum Wan Rd, is the Middle Kingdom, a sort of Chinese cultural village with temples, pagodas and traditional street scenes.

Excellent fun and good value for money!

    mtrisolini recommends this,

I decided to take a special female friend to Ocean Park as a surprise on a Sunday. The park feels so big and there are so many different types of attractions that even on HK Hand Over holiday weekend it didn't seem very busy. Arriving early around 10:30 and have an idea of what shows/feeding times are running at what time really helps make the most of the day. The panda feeding was fun to watch but the highlight of the day had to be the large main Aquarium and the dolphin and seal show. We did the large aquarium last as that way we enjoy the tranquility of sitting on the floor and just watching the fish to our hearts content in complete peace and quiet. For the Aquarium I would advise arriving between 7pm and 9pm as the majority of people have left the park. It well worth getting the cable cart early in the morning as it quickly fills up to a standstill by 12/1pm. Finally the rides are great fun but be warned they certainly are not as impressive as those you would find in Alton Towers in the UK. Lastly the Simbio water show at 9pm outside the Large aquarium is a nice way to end the day ( Even if it is a little cheesy but still fun).

Fun for both young adults/ couple - something different to taking a girl to yet another restaurant. Matt & Yvonne

    An outstanding day out.

    angriest recommends this,

Ocean Park is an outstanding day out for visitors to Hong Kong. It is basically two large attractions in one. The first is a top-notch theme park, with well designed and exciting roller coasters and other carnival rides. The view from the rollercoasters, incorporating the lush greenery and ocean views of Southern Hong Kong, is an added bonus.

The second attraction is the extensive and exceptionally well presented animal park. It provides a wonderful insight into Chinese and Asian fauna, including both black and white and red pandas, the Chinese salamander, jellyfish, tropical fish and Chinese sturgeon.

One note is that the park is built on two separate hilly areas, with a cable car ride linking them together. Visitors with movement difficulties might find getting around a little tiring.

Good for: all - families with kids incl

    Fun and environmentally friendly!

    eugene310 recommends this,

Ocean Park is great place to spend the day for couples and families alike. There are short, fun, carnival-like rides as well as shows featuring trained dolphins and seals. Seems like a small park, but you can really spend the entire day there. Ocean Park is a relatively inexpensive park (compared to Disneyland) with a heavy emphasis on family fun and the environment.

    Ocean Park Adventure

    mls2104 recommends this,

Easily reached by scenic double decker bus routes which run hourly, Ocean Park is a great place to spend the day. You can purchase your bus ticket and your gate pass at the bus terminal and it was easy to find. from directions because everything is written in 3 languages including english. Because the park is built into the hillside you get an opportunity to get to the next level of attractions via two storey escalators - 3 of them. You can also take the gondolas across to the other side of the park to see the pandas and get a panoramic view of the bay. Prices for rides and shows were reasonable and worthwhile. I enjoyed my morning and afternoon there. Wish I would have had more than a 1 day stay while on my way home. I was travelling alone on this leg of the journey but felt completely safe and at ease while there. Panda access was limited through a glass window as the entire exhibit was under renovations which was a real let down but that's the breaks. Good family activity and a way to spend a leisurely day in Hong Kong.
