Grissini
Fluffy, chewy and addictive, the foot-long grissini (bread sticks) here are – appropriately – the best in town. But leave room for the Milanese specialties, especially the pasta and risotto, and pair them with a bottle from the 1000-strong cellar. This stylish restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows commanding views of the harbour. The Sunday brunch ($455), with its exquisite, strictly Italian offerings, is our favourite buffet in town.

Da Domenico
Easily the best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong, this place serves excellent southern Italian cooking in an airy dining room. Ingredients including seafood are flown in weekly from Italy. No surprise the mozzarella deserves praise; the linguini with red shrimps and the grilled calamari (both $480) should be enshrined. The Roman chef-owner is a temperamental fellow, but who cares when he cooks this well? Dinner reservations essential.

Cine Città
The Michelin inspectors who recommended this sleek place probably enjoyed twirling their taglioni between real-life supermodels and blown-up stills of Fellini movies almost as much as they did the stellar Italian fare. The bigoli with duck ragout and porcini is absolutely divine; the friendly sommelier can help you pick a bottle from the famous wine list.

Gaia Ristorante
Gaia was considered the best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong not so long ago. Now the attention has shifted to Da Domenico. Such is the fickle nature of Hong Kong foodies. Yet the standard at Gaia remains high (as do the prices), and blueberries are used in unexpected ways.

Nicholini's
This refined restaurant's approach to northern Italian cuisine has won it praise from Italian expats - a certain stamp of approval. Simple yet superb antipasti and shellfish dishes are firm favourites here. It also has an excellent bar.

Va Bene
This smart restaurant bears a striking resemblance to a neighbourhood trattoria in Venice. It's a good choice for a special date or an extravagant celebration. There's a set lunch for HK$198. Book ahead; dress smart.

Rughetta
This basement restaurant with a branch in New York City serves reliable ‘Roman’ (read earthy Italian) cuisine – though it might suffer after being discovered by the cheap lunch crowd.

Pepperoni's Pizza
This place serves up some decent pizza, although you are advised to stick with the classics and stay away from the hybrid recipes such as the Cajun. The atmosphere is relaxing and fun.

Sabatini Italian
It’s easy to overindulge at this warm, rustic restaurant – the hearty Roman fare is exceptional and the antipasto spread ($258) is a feast on its own.

La Pizzeria
Most people come here for the pizza (around HK$45 to around HK$95), but there are lots of pasta choices and main courses such as fajitas and barbecued spareribs.
