Lonely Planet review for American Restaurant
The friendly American (which chose its name to attract Yank sailors cruising the Wanch for sustenance while on R&R during the Vietnam War) has been serving decent Northern Chinese cuisine for well over half a century, including a rarely seen Northern delicacy – pig’s throat stir-fried with parsley.

Don't be fooled by the name...
theresatravels recommends this,
If there's not a riot happening at the next table, you're not really in Hong Kong, and riot you'll surely find at the American Restaurant. The family groups of locals come in fairly late and stay for hours fighting(Joking?Gossiping?Hard to tell) and ordering dish after dish in this noisy and friendly restaurant. The interior is sterile and unimpressive, but since it was full of locals, we knew it must have something good to offer
The menu is mainly a la Beijing, the famous Peking duck was remarkable and , unlike some of the traditional joint that serve only the skin for the pancakes, The American serves it with meat - nice and tender.
Apart from the bird, the spring rolls, assorted vegetables, Hong Kong fried rice and the boiled tripe with cold sauce that we ordered (and guess which one was the dare)set the four of us back about $170 each including drinks, which is great value for such a feast. The beer is good, on tap and the friendly staff keep it coming. If you don't order the popular Beijing duck or Beggar's chicken, the bill can be as low as $90 a head for a group of 4.
The dishes at American Restaurant are meant for 2 or more, so it's a great place to go in a group, but can be quite pricey and hard to get a table if you're alone. Enjoy the fun and noisy atmosphere.Order something a bit off the wall!
