Chinese, Northern restaurants in Hong Kong

  1. A

    American Restaurant

The friendly American (which chose its name to attract Yank sailors cruising the Wanch for sustenance while on R&R during the Vietnam War) has been serving decent Northern Chinese cuisine for well over half a century, including a rarely seen Northern delicacy – pig’s throat stir-fried with parsley.

    Hutong

Entering Hutong, which has one Michelin star, is like walking onto a Zhang Yimou film set. It’s ancient China recreated for the modern Western imagination replete with red lanterns and Buddha’s busts. Mind you, it’s all quite stylish, the service is great, the views stunning and the food is actually quite impressive.

  3. C

    Spring Deer

Brisk, bright and busy, the Spring Deer is believed to be Hong Kong’s most authentic northern Chinese restaurant. The roast mutton is the best south of Xinjiang, while the deep-fried bamboo shoots and preserved cabbage tossed with glazed walnuts is a scrumptious mouthful. Book up to 10 days in advance for a weekend dinner.

    Wang Fu

At this clean little stall, you’ll see visitors from Beijing demolishing plate after plate of dumplings. There are nine delicious varieties ($30), including lamb and cumin, and the popular egg and tomato (available after 6pm). The branch (65 Wellington St; closed Sat) across the street also serves northern Chinese dishes.

  5. E

    Peking Restaurant

This restaurant is so China Town c 1970 that you’d expect Bruce Lee to show up for dinner with his nunchaku. It may also feel a little cramped if you’re chubbier than Bruce. But you won’t mind because the roast duck is crispy and the waiters pleasant, even if a little too efficient.

  6. F

    Peking Dumpling Shop

This tiny shop whips up decent pastries and noodles (per serving $7 to $32) of the chewy northern variety. Get your carb fix in booths or, if the smell of grease gets to you, on the go.
