Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

  1. I Under the beginning of October is national Holiday in China and is best to avoid travelling in that time. Is that so? What days in October are best to avoid? what earliest date in October would you suggest to begin my trip in Beijing.

  2. Could you please suggest a 3-4 weeks itinerary in China? The places I am most interested in are: Beijing, Xian (maybe), Chengdu, Sichuan, Yunnan (Lijiang, Tiger leaping gorge)…

Hi all,

I'm a Mexican citizen planning a trip to China. Our itinerary looks as follows:

-Fly into Hong Kong. Stay there three days.
-Fly to Shanghai. Stay there three days.
-Train to Beijing. Stay there three days.
-Train to Xian. Stay there two days.
-Fly to Hong Kong. Stay there one day.
-Fly back home.

I understand that we need a single-entry visa, as we will only be entering mainland China once; however, my question is about the round-trip flight requirement. Our round-trip flight is to/from…

Hi, we have decided not to overnight on the mountain and will now leave Hongcun early morning and spend the day only then overnight in Huangshan City. 17january. Questions are :

Last week me and my friends wanted to visit Seda County/Larung Gar during our backpacking trip through South-China. After a 12 hour busride we were stopped at the border of Seda County by local armed forces. They told us the government closed of Seda for foreigners.
They also told us bus stations, hostels, etc... were warned to tell foreign tourists Seda was closed off but they still sold us tickets anyway. (They probably ripped us off to make a profit. The bus driver also acted very shady…

Hi,
I am planning to travel to Chine starting mid-October for about a month or so.
The planned destinations are: Beijing, Yunnan, Sichuan, Shanghai.

Do you think the weather at this time should be good or to cold to travel? I plan to hike also the tiger leap gorge.
I'm a bit worried about the floods I hear about in the news. do think it should be safe at that time?

also, how safe and easy is it for a sole traveler in china in general?

thanks!
