Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

Hi,

I keep reading about 1.5 hour Bingling Si visits but that seems incredibly short to me. Therefor I plan to skip the boat tours and do a return car trip from Liujiaxiu (200 RMB?) and walk around for a couple of hours but wonder what to expect. Would 3 or so hours be decent? And will the taxi driver think the same about that? :-(

Tnx...

Hello everybody,
Me and a friend are going to China in September and we're planning to go to Guilin for about 1 week. We're very interested in going to smaller towns and villages rather than staying in Guilin all the time and we've found that both Yangshuo and Longsheng look very beautiful.
It would be nice if someone who has been there could share their experiences and give their opinions on where to go (we are also open to other places) and if it's hard to find places to stay the night in these…

Hello - we will be doing an 11-day personalized individual Highlights Tour of China with some agency. Right now considering Kensington Tours (reputation for very good) and China Highlights (just found on the internet). Kensington is at least 50% more expensive for essentially same tour (e.g. 3 internal flights). Does anyone have experience with either agency? Or would you recommend a different agency? Need assurance of good English-speaking guides plus excellent information about what we are…

Hello all,

I'm an American citizen already traveling in Europe (just with a passport, I have no visas for any European country except Russia if that helps.) As my plans have been developing, I want to visit China next month, but do not have a visa for mainland China and am already outside the US. Current plan is the cross the Mongolia border into China via Trans-Mongolia Railway (since its overland, I know that I cannot take advantage of the Transit-without-visa 72-hour permit in Beijing…

We arrive by plane the day before, but I imagine the kids will be exhausted. But then hopefully they sleep well enough to enjoy some of the next day before our evening flight onwards to our final destination. Any recommendations for what to do to show off some authentic 'Asian city' things to my small town Canadian kids? We will try and grab some local food (my kids are used to trying different foods) -- any suggestions on meals, or types of places to eat? We will also probably just wander the…

Does anyone have any advice or a rough idea of price / times for getting a suit made in Hong Kong?

Im also going to pass through Delhi so I could get one there, however I don't know if the styles will be western and contemporary. If the price isn't prohibitive in Hong Kong I think it might be a better bet for me.

Thanks

Hello,

A pal and I are currently studying abroad in China. We have a couple of free days coming up so we decided to take an overnight sleeper train this Saturday night (May 27th) west to Xining. We will be in Xining all of Sunday (May 28th) and Monday (May 29th), and then we will take a train back east Tuesday morning (May 30th).

How can we best make use of our two days in Xining? We have a definite interest in visiting Lake Kokonor/Qinghai and we want to hike just about anything we can. We're…
