Lonely Planet review for Shāmiàn Island

The leafy oasis of Shāmiàn Island , which was acquired as a foreign concession in 1859 after the two Opium Wars, is a peaceful respite from the city. Back in the 19th century, the British and French were granted permission to set up their warehouses on this 'sand surface island'. The sandbank was connected to the mainland by several bridges, with iron gates that prohibited any Chinese from entering the island. Major renovation has restored some of the buildings to their original appearance, transforming them into chic restaurants and hotels.

Shamian Dajie is a tranquil stretch of gardens and trees. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, built by the French in 1892, is on the eastern end of the thoroughfare. Art 64, a contemporary art gallery, is worth a visit.

Shāmiàn Traditional Chinese Medical Center, at the western end of the island, is recommended by travellers for its massage (Y68 per hour).

To reach the island, take metro line 1 to Huángshā station.

By far the most romantic and serene places in guangzhou!!

    mtrisolini recommends this,

Ok this is a must location to go to if your here for only one night or one week. Ideal for couples this quaint and charming colonial island has a lot of good restaurants and with great views and a very impressive waterfall based in ground floor of the White Swan hotel. The restaurants are scattered all over the island and cater for a wide range of taste from traditional chines to Thai. The waterfall in the White Swan hotel is a must as the old decor and the ornaments around the hotel are very old and also very expensive; showing off the very best of chines arts and crafts. This arts and and crafts can be a bit ostentatious but is certainly an insight into the culture of china.
