Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

Last time I was in Beijing I had hired a driver and car to take me and a friend to visit the Ming Tombs. I explained several times to the company - in Chinese- before they sent the driver, that I wanted to see all the tombs and take photos. The car cost RMB 750 I think, and that was for 8 hours driving.

Anyway, shortly after we set off the driver started telling us how only three of the tombs were open and so we were just going to those. I could see that I was going to have an argument when we…

I would like to travel from Kunming to Chengdu via Xiangcheng - Litang - Kanding for two weeks towards the end of October. Is this possible or will the weather be an issue? Temperatures during this time of year? How are the roads these days? Is there still a possibility of this area being closed to foreigners? Thanks!

This is our second trip to China. Last time was 2008 and in the southwest focusing on minority villages. We will be travelling at the end of October. The two choices are western Sichuan on the southern Tibet Highway or Xinjiang. We are leaning towards the latter due to the time of year and weather restrictions at such a high altitude (opinions about this are welcome). So my itinerary would be to fly to Urumqi and make a circle to Kashgar - Hotan - continue the southern silk road to Turpan…

Mt Hua

Hello all,

I will be in Xi'an in August and my friend wants to hike Mt Hua. At first glance this seemed like a great idea- I love hiking and being in nature in general. However, after looking up the pathways it seems as though the hike is very dangerous, to the point where a single mistake can lead to serious injury or death. Even the easier paths involve small, steep, and overcrowded trails at various points. I was wondering if any of you could share your experience on the path, and perhaps…

Hello,

I am planning to travel a part of the silkroad from Iran towards China. After this trip I won't be going home yet.

Is it possible to get a Chinese visa without airplane tickets? I am entering the country from Kazachstan or Kyrgyzstan and I will be leaving through a Southeast Asian border.

One option I am considering is buying an airplane ticket from China to another country, wether I am gonna use it or not. It does show them I am planning on leaving the country on time, but it won't…

Just got back from an amazing visit to middle-of-nowhere Inner Mongolia where me and two friends stayed with a local family in their yurt. Nothing but sheep and horses for miles, beautiful air, and kind hosts. It was really difficult to find info online and set this up, though, so I thought I'd write about it here in case anyone else wants to find an experience like this. I had browsed this forum a lot before my trip and got some good info, so figured I'd pay it forward.

Most "yurt stays" in…
