This pedestrianised street just off Wangfujing Dajie is a jumble of atmosphere and flavour. Stalls are bursting with food from all over China, including flat bread, oodles of noodles and pancakes.

Getting off the subway at Wanfujing station, you need only walk for about five minutes along the main street before turning left into what appears to be a hidden-away market. The market stalls are draped by bright red and gold banners and the smell of hot cooking food will surely arouse your curiosity. Take the plunge and spend some time exploring the stalls and you will be rewarded with an assortment of the most unusual food. For example, you can purchase Star Fish on skewers! Or if you prefer, why not try some skewered Scorpions (yes, scorpions!), Millipeed or other insect? If travelling in Winter, during Spring Festival, the crowds are extremely friendly and welcoming and you will no doubt find something good to satisfy your hunger including an assortment of hot teas. The street also offers a selection of desserts, including toffee'd fruit on skewers that is simply delicious. Most food here will set you back about 5 Yuan ($1.20 AUD at time of writing). You can come during the day or the evening as it is open until late and the photo opportunities are endless. While generally accepting of photography, it's considered polite to ask beforehand or better still, perhaps buy something. I just came back from Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and although i did all the touristy things, it was Wangfujing Street Snack Market that i have found myself raving about to friends and family, and i'm really enjoying the looks of amazement and sheer disbelief on their faces when i proudly present them with photos of the unusual food! A visit to Wangufjing Street is a must. This excusion and be followed by shopping at some huge department stores on the main strip. PS: If you are in need of some R and R afterwards, continue along the main street for about 750 meters, to Heping Foot Massage 81 and indulge in an 70min massage and pedicure for $25AUD!
