The Hutong information
Down a maze of narrow alleys, the Hutong is a highly recommended Chinese-culture centre, run by a group of extremely knowledgeable locals and expats. Classes are held in a peaceful converted courtyard, and focus on cooking and guided tours. See its website for the schedule.
Its cookery classes are hugely popular, with a focus on cuisine from around China, from xiaolongbao to hand-puilled noodles. Its guided tours include the three-hour 'Hútòng Tour' (¥260) around the city's network of alleyways, the five-hour 'Tea Tour' (¥300), which includes a trip to Mǎliándào Tea Market, and the two-hour 'Culinary Market Tour' (¥200).
