Liquid paper graffiti covers the tabletops and windows at this tiny café, tucked away down a narrow passageway in El Plan. Forget about menus, there are two options here: chorrillana (a mountain of French fries under a blanket of fried pork, onions and egg) and desmechada (stewed beef) – one dish serves two. Folk singers serenade you into the wee hours on weekends.

    We went to Casino Social J.Cruz two weeks ago with a couple of argentinian and two other chilean girls. We haven't say a lot about this typical restaurant, just some tips like "we should be there before 10 pm, otherwise we couldn't get a table" or "you can't smoke inside". From the minute they get into the museum-restaurant, they were speachless. At the moment we arrive, they put on the table fresh bread and pebre (chili sauce). The argentinian guy even tried some. We ordered two chorrillanas (their speciality): one for two, and one for three. We ordered some beers and sodas too, and we got them inmediatly. Shortly afterwards, we got our food. They are incredibly big. We ate it and we didn't even talk in between. So delicious. After a while, we were able to speak again. The argentinian were so grateful that we recommended this lovely spot. They started to tell us how mad they were at a chilean friend of them, who hadn't say a word about J. Cruz in eight years. "We loved it" they said. We were so contented, that we showed something new and fresh to people who already knew Valparaiso.
