  1. Bar Inglés

This is a classic old favorite, with dark wood, white tablecloths and lots of atmosphere. Its decor shows the town's rich maritime tradition.

  2. Bote Salvavidas

The seafood may be overpriced and the service may be lacking, but this is a great place for a close-up of a working port in action. Just get a coffee if you're not happy about the prices.

  5. Casino Royal J Cruz

What a fantastic place this is, with its clutter of antiques everywhere, graffiti on the tabletops and a chaotic, 'anything goes' vibe that is like all Valparaíso distilled into one tiny café. Folk singers are likely to serenade you during your meal. Menus are for wimps here. You simply plump for the mountainous chorrillana (a piled plate of spicy pork, onions and egg, buried under a blanket of chips) and feast away. It's tucked away down a little side alley.

On Cerro Concepción, this bright, cozy place prepares delicious vegetarian food, coffee, many different types of tea and lovely hot chocolate, all served in literary, arty surrounds.

  7. Le Filou de Montpellier

A cute-as-sixpence restaurant run by a mad Frenchman, the food is excellent value and exotic. The lunch menu changes daily but could include quiche Lorraine, roast turkey stuffed with prunes in a cognac and port sauce, and dessert.

  8. Los Porteños

Troubadours often strum their stuff during mealtimes at this cheap, good-value seafood restaurant near the Mercado Central. You'll often get a drink thrown in if you look a bit hesitant before sitting down.

  9. Nuevo Restaurant O'Higgins

Highly recommended by Valparaíso regulars. You too could fall for the charms of the pork ribs coated in white wine sauce, as well as the busy traditional ambience.

  10. Pasta y Vino

Possibly the most innovative and interesting of Valpo's new restaurants, this place's growing reputation means it fills up fast. If you do manage to get a seat, the ravioli cooked with a hint of curry and coconut comes highly recommended.
