Valparaíso Practical information

Health & safety

Dangers & annoyances

The area around the Mercado Central and La Iglesia Matriz has a reputation for petty street crime and muggings. Avoid flashy displays of wealth here, and keep a close watch on your belongings throughout Valparaíso, as there are regular reports of opportunist theft. Don't fall for the old 'Can I take your picture?' trick either, as you are likely to lose your camera. There is no need to be too obsessive, however. Most people wander through Valparaíso's streets without any problem at all. With the usual precautions most areas are safe enough, at least during daylight. At night it's probably best to stick to tried and trusted places, and wander with at least one companion.
