Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Practical information

Money & costs

Money

Most businesses on Rapa Nui, especially residenciales and rental agencies, readily accept US cash (and euros, albeit at a pinch). Travelers from Tahiti must bring US cash. Some eateries and stores show prices in both dollars and pesos but use a lower conversion rate, so using pesos saves money. Many residenciales, hotels and tour agencies accept credit cards but they usually charge an arm and a leg for the service - a commission of 5% to 10% is common.

In any case, don't rely solely on your credit card and make sure you keep some cash in reserve for the inevitable day when the ATM decides to throw a wobbly.
