Lonely Planet review for Servicios Astronómicos Maury y Compañía

Take a Tour of the Night Sky from San Pedro with Servicios Astronómicos Maury y Compañía. Tours leave nightly at 7:30pm and 10:30pm in winter and 9pm and midnight in summer (except around the full moon), and they alternate between Spanish, English and French. Bring very warm clothes. French astronomer Alain Maury ferries travelers into the desert, far from intrusive light contamination, where they can enjoy the stars in all their glory. He owns several chunky telescopes through which visitors can gawk at galaxies, nebulae, planets and more. Shooting stars are guaranteed.

Great view and information about the sky

    wiemie recommends this,

This tour operates nearly every evening and a couple of times (seperate English/Spanish/French tours available often). The bus is a little hard to find (do not wait at the SPACE-office since the bus is waiting just around the corner) but will take you out of town to a little place middle-of-nowhere where some telescopes are set up. Our English tour was guided by a former Canadian who's English was excellent and he was talking slowly to make us understand everything he said.

Tour will start with some basic information about the stars, constellations and astronomy and astrology. Basic information that you might have heard at school. The great thing here is you can actually see what they are telling about (because of clear sky and using a Laser-pointer)

After about 45-50 mins. you continue to the telescopes (8 in total, max groupsize 24) 6 of them are fixed at certain objects (like clusters of stars), two of them are automatic so will follow an object across the sky (like Saturn). The telescopes are adjusted by the tourguide every few minutes for the best possible view. It is possible to take some pictures through one of the telescope (so we have nice pictures of Saturn!) and the guide will help you.

Finally time for a hot drink and Q&A with the tourguide.

Tour is well worth a visit, at just CH$15.000 (incl transfer) excellent value for money
