Getting there & away
Although Ovalle is 30km east of the Panamericana, many north-south buses pass through here. The bus terminal (cnr Maestranza & Balmaceda) has regular services to La Serena (US$2, 1¾ hours), Santiago (US$6.50, five hours) and other major destinations. Regional companies provide service to more out-of-the-way places. To get to Hurtado, look for buses at the Feria Modelo between noon and 4pm.
Faster taxi colectivos to La Serena (US$3.25, 1¼ hours) go with Agencia Tacso (Ariztía Pontiente 159; 7am-8pm).
