Getting there & away
None of the major towns in Middle Chile are particularly far from Santiago. Even Concepción, the country's second most important city, is reachable in around eight hours - perfect for an overnight bus journey. However, Concepción is far enough away to warrant its own airport, and it is served by regular flights from Santiago, which can significantly cut your travel time if you are in a hurry. It also has flights from further flung locations, such as Arica.
The majority of travelers make their way out to the towns within Middle Chile by bus. As with most of the rest of the country, the public-transportation connections are excellent, whether coming from the lakes region to the south, via Santiago to the north, or even internationally via Mendoza in Argentina. Occasionally the Los Libertadores border crossing is closed due to bad weather, but this is rare, and both Chilean and Argentine authorities have become adept at clearing the way in the shortest possible time.
