Sushi restaurants in Central America

  1. A

    Panadería Alemania

A German bakery with beautifully flaky croissants, a respectably authentic sushi counter doing what it can with the local rice and an international kitchen turning out Euro-style numbers can all be found at this local hangout. The patio is also a great place for a beer under the canopy of the huge guanacaste tree.

    Wok & Roll

Korean-American owner Kandice routinely inspires fear in local fishermen throughout the Nicoya. She is famous for scrutinizing daily tuna and mahi-mahi catches, and will only buy the freshest of fish. The result: some of the best sushi we've ever eaten. Her woks and Vietnamese spring rolls are also popular.

    Sushi Playa

With cool breezes coming off the ocean and the low light of its open-air terrace, the sushi bar at Cafe de Playa has a low-key ambience conducive to properly appreciating the nuances of the maguro (tuna) melting on your tongue.

The best snack in town is at this US-run surf camp, where you can order the famous ‘nachos as big as your ass’ (or sushi rolls) while sucking down cold ones on the outdoor deck until 2am.

  7. Koji's

Koji Hyodo's sushi shack in nearby Playa Hermosa is a twinkling beacon of fresh raw excellence. The atmosphere and service are superior, of course, but his food is a higher truth. The grilled octopus is only barely fired and sprinkled with sea salt. There's a sweet crunch to his lobster sashimi, sliced trace-paper thin and sprinkled with fresh ginger. The tuna rivals even Hawaiian sushi houses (and that's saying something), and all of his signature rolls melt and spark with creative spice. Between bites sip one of two local microbrews on tap. There are generally bar seats available, but if you want a table, book ahead. They're located 2km north of Florblanca. If you cross…
