Chinese restaurants in Central America

  1. A

    Restaurante Lai-Lai

This Chinese restaurant is housed somewhat improbably in a beautiful converted colonial mansion, with azulejo (painted tile) floors and an inner courtyard with filtered sunlight from above. The food is a step up from similar restaurants - not exactly refined, but quite tasty. The 'personal menus' come with three different items and a tall glass of soda, and there are of course the mongo 'family' plates typical of many Chinese restaurants.

Service is uneven, but at least the building will occupy your eyes while you wait.

  2. B

    El Mandarín

Laminated tables with conference-room chairs are arranged in straight lines, four deep, at this popular Chinese hotel-restaurant. The dining room is a bit worn, but clean, and maintained in arctic conditions by industrial-strength air-con. Like so many Chinese restaurants in Latin America, service is lightning quick, if not exactly warm, and the portions enormous. Two can share a plate of shrimp chow mien, a side of wontons and two beers for under twelve dollars.

  3. C

    Restaurante Royal

While so many Chinese restaurants bowl you over with huge portions and no-nonsense service, the Royal lets you enjoy the experience, starting with a pleasant air-cooled dining room (the goldfish tank is spotless - that's gotta be a good sign) and culminating in tasty dishes, like garlic shrimp over rice noodles and stir-fried broccoli, mushrooms and bamboo shoots. Service is terrific, and the prices amazingly affordable.

  4. D

    Restaurant Aiwa

A huge marquee–like sign and swinging glass doors make it easy to mistake Aiwa for a movie theater; inside, the air-cooled dining room has gleaming tables and floors, and waiters zipping around with huge plates of chop suey, chow mein and more. Portions are enormous – a regular plate serves two, a family plate serves four or more.

  5. E

    Chon Saan Palace

Considered the best Chinese restaurant in Belize City, Chon Saan would probably be considered mediocre in most US cities. Though portions are ample, meals are uninspired, and tacking BZ$5 per person on the bill for Chinese tea bumps the restaurant into a price bracket disproportionate to its culinary quality.

  6. Restaurante y Parrillada Vicente

If you're looking to take a break from all the rice and beans, this greasy-spoon Chinese restaurant serves up all your Latin American-Asian favorites. Brightly painted walls hung with Van Gogh prints form the backdrop to excellent chow mein, chicken with sweet-and-sour sauce and roast pork.

  7. F

    Restaurant Hai Pin

When you tire of gallo pinto, you can change it up with some Chinese food. This popular open-air restaurant enjoys views of the main drag, which certainly offers up some interesting people-watching given the nature of the town.

  8. Tommy’s Restaurant

A decent Chinese restaurant, Tommy’s serves up localized Chinese dishes such as conch fried rice and lobster chow mein. Try the fried stuffed crab claw (BZ$30), expensive but tasty.

  9. G

    Restaurante Long Wah

With friendly service and decorative red-painted arches, the Long Wah is a good choice from Zona 1's other concentration of Chinese eateries, in the blocks west of Parque Centenario.

  10. H

    Restaurante Las Brasas

Half a block from the Parque Central, this is one of Huehue's best restaurants. With a good combination of steaks and Chinese on the menu, it should be pushing multiple buttons.

  12. I

    Ta-Fa Comida China

One of the contenders for best Chinese food in Nicaragua. Most dishes are a reasonable price; with the much pricier Peking duck and shrimp-ball soup you'll need to order ahead.

  13. J

    Restaurant Kam Mun

Here you will find Chinese fare, served in a nice, clean atmosphere, 500m west of the plaza. Enjoy your meal surrounded by Chinese dragons, Buddhas and floral paintings.

  14. K

    Hang Cheong Restaurant

One of the few Chinese restaurants in town, Hang Cheong seems to enjoy the best reputation (if lunchtime crowd sizes are anything to go by).

  15. L

    Café Flor

The Flor makes a good stab at Thai, Indonesian and Chinese food. Dishes come in generous quantity and there's live music nightly.

  16. M

    Restaurante La Estrella

An efficient, friendly, economical Chinese restaurant, the Estrella has several tofu options.

  17. N

    Madame Chang

The top Chinese restaurant in town offers Oriental opulence in the center of a historic Bella Vista home. Although Western palates fearful of Asian cuisine will find familiar favorites, serious aficionados should choose any of the traditional offerings including pato al estilo Pekin (Peking duck), filete 'tit pang' (sizzling sliced beef with oyster sauce) and pichón en pétalos de lechuga (a combination of duck, chicken and pigeon, served on a bed of crispy rice noodles).

In a country where Chinese food is often a sorry excuse to serve up day-old fried rice, Madame Chang is a breath of fresh lotus-scented air.
