    Restaurante Doña Luisa Xicotencatl

Probably Antigua's best-known restaurant, this is a place to enjoy the colonial patio ambience over breakfast or a light meal. The bakery here sells many kinds of breads, including whole grain. Check out the hot-from-the-oven banana bread daily at around 14:00.

  2. Fata Morgana

Really good coffee has finally made it to San Pedro thanks to this little Italian restaurant/café/bakery. Also on offer are some good basic pastas and excellent homemade breads and pastries.

  3. Beach House

This is a fine hotel, but they’re simply overpriced – the last, spectacularly so.

  4. B

    San Martín & Company

Cool and clean, with ceiling fans inside and a small terrace outside, this Zona Viva café and bakery is great at any time of day. For breakfast try a scrumptious omelet and croissant (the former arrives inside the latter). Later there are tempting and original sandwiches, soups and salads. The entrance is on 2a Av.

  5. C

    Pan y Miel

The best breakfast in town can be had at this branch of the local bakery, which serves its excellent bread as sandwiches and French toast, as well as offering a buffet line with casado fixings, pastries and fresh fruit. There’s a surlier bakery-only branch a block north of Parque Central.

    Shalom Bakery Cafe

There's no doubt about it - a bagel is a coveted food here in Latin America, and no matter how much rice and beans you eat, it just doesn't compare. We like ours with poppy seeds and an extra smear of veggie cream cheese, but go ahead and have it any way you want.

  7. Cyber Moagüina

Named for one of the original 10 indigenous settlements of the valley, this cybercafé's coffee, batidos and pastries are so good that it's almost worth the slightly higher Internet prices to enjoy them. Or just come for the coffee and surf elsewhere.

  8. E

    Pan Pay

This popular beachside spot is excellent for strong coffee, fresh baked goods and hearty wedges of fluffy Spanish omelet served with crisp tomato-bread. There are sandwiches and other light meals, but it’s thoughts of their flaky chocolate croissants that make us want to jump out of bed in the morning.

  9. Panaderia Europeo

Sample the island's best baked goods at this tasty bakery, though be warned that the huge, fluffy cinnamon rolls are highly addictive. Wash it all down with a cup of gourmet brew and you've got yourself a fine start to the day.

  10. Cafetín El Faro

Run by the youth center, this is also the best bakery in town. Enjoy delicious fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, pizza and real coffee in the pleasant palapa (thatched-roof) dining area, or inside over a game of ping-pong.

  12. Pastelería Alemana

On the main road 2km south of town, this gorgeous spot serves decadent fresh-baked pies alongside strong cups of coffee. If you're missing the motherland, this is also the best place in town to buy authentic German breads.

  13. F

    Los Alpes

A relaxing garden restaurant/bakery. It's set well back from the road, behind a wall of vegetation, giving it a feeling of deep seclusion. The freshly made sandwiches and cakes really hit the spot.

  14. G

    Bagel Factory

Anywhere outside of NYC, bagels can be a dodgy proposition, but these guys do OK. Fresh ingredients, plenty of options, a super-clean environment and a sunny courtyard make this place a winner.

    Panadería Santa Clara

Follow your nose to this outstanding bakery, which is stocked with all types of homemade breads as well as eye-popping pastries, cookies and cakes. The macaroons totally rule!

    Pastelería Ban Ban

A good bakery just south of Parque Libertad, Ban Ban serves up fresh pastries, simple sandwiches, and coffee all day. Air-conditioning and a children's playroom are big pluses.

  17. J

    Bagel Barn

Just off Parque Central, this is popular for bagels with almost anything, and breakfasts and coffee. They also offer decaf espresso, although we fail to see the point.

    Caye Caulker Bakery

If you want a quick breakfast to go, stop by the Caye Caulker Bakery to pick up fresh bread, rolls and buns (baked goods cost under BZ$2).

For some fine pastry-munching right on the plaza, check this place out, where your decision will probably be aided by the menus with food photos on them.
