Central America

Gay/Lesbian entertainment in Central America

  1. Grupo Venancio

When you tell your taxi driver 'Grupo Venancio,' three blocks east and three blocks south of Parque Morazán, he may ask why you want to hang out with lesbians and witches (brujas). But there are so many reasons! One of Matagalpa's best nights out, this women's collective runs an excellent bar and restaurant which shows movies, has live music and hosts all manner of woman-empowering events.

It's usually only open Fridays, with movies and a quieter crowd, and Saturdays, which get packed if the band is good; there's usually no cover. This is a good place to start looking for Matagalpa's thriving gay and lesbian scene, but respectful heterosexual men can and have scored…

  2. Glam

In an industrial area north of downtown, Glam proudly stands as the biggest gay dance club in the country. Saturday is generally the best night to go, when a wild and celebratory crowd fills the dance floor until late in the morning, though talented DJs spin house, drum 'n' bass, soul and Latin classics here every night. This place is best reached by taxi - it's located in front of the Club de Montana.

    Genetic

One of the few local gay venues, this used to be called Pandora's Box, and has been hosting Guatemala's gay crowd since the '70s, although it gets a mixed crowd and is one of the best places in town to go for trance/dance music. It has two dance floors, a rooftop patio and a relaxed atmosphere with a mainly under-30 crowd.

    Mileniun

Gay and lesbian travelers will find the gay nightlife scene buried. Deeply. The only openly gay places at the time of research were Yascuas and Mileniun, two discotheques located in the same building. It's easy enough to find one if the other is slow, but that doesn't help the fact that the pickings are so slim.

    Marquís Discotheque Bar

A gay-friendly (but not gay-exclusive) bar and disco at the back of Plaza San Felipe, a small commercial center. The light is very dim and there's not much seating, but the music - a mix of techno and hip-hop - should keep you on your feet. Drinks are cheaper here than elsewhere.

    Spot

San Pedro Sula's only openly gay club, the dance floor is not only jam packed with men on the dance floor, but also swinging around a stripper pole and shaking it in a cage. Disco and Top 40 rule this place - Madonna, of course, features prominently. Spot is straight-friendly.

An unspoken meeting place for lesbians, this lounge-disco has big couches and lots of tables to kick back, drink and talk. On weekends, the floor gets crowded with dancers moving to a good mix of Latin rock, salsa, merengue and regguetón.
