Places in Grand Cayman
George Town & Seven Mile Beach
George Town is the supremely wealthy but surprisingly modest capital of the Cayman Islands. While no doubt cosmopolitan, it’s tiny, tidy and easy to walk around. North of the harbor and town center is Seven Mile Beach, a gorgeous stretch of unbroken white sand where Grand Cayman’s tourist industry is concentrated.
North of George Town, West Bay is quietly suburban, and home to the remotely alluring Barkers National Park – the first national park in Cayman. Barkers National Park combines low scrub, long sandy beaches and mangroves. Stingray City is 3km east offshore. Heavily promoted trips to Hell are really stops in a gift shop parking lot.
Historic Bodden Town was the capital of the Cayman Islands until George Town scooped that honor in the mid-19th century. It’s far removed from the bustle of the west in feel – if not distance – and is a worthy stop for a stroll on any round-island tour. Grab lunch at Chester’s Fish Fry, which has treats grilling all day.
