A
Emperial Kish Inn
The sign over the bar reading ‘Love the Animals’ immediately reveals where the place is coming from. The only flesh here – yourself notwithstanding – is that which is pressed in the local greeting, the Jamaican ‘yardie’ handshake, where friends push their fists together while swiping thumbs. On the menu is gluten brownstew, curry tofu, roast yams and an ongoing dialogue about the intricacies of Rastafari.

Restaurante EI Bambú
This is the first and finest in Havana vegetarian dining and has led the way in education efforts as to the benefits of a meatless diet. The all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is served alfresco deep in the botanical gardens, with the natural setting paralleling the wholesome tastiness of the food. For CUC$15 you can gorge on soups and salads, root vegetables, tamales and eggplant caviar.

If an oasis within a garden is hard to envision, check out this serene spot centered on a small fountain. You’ll be rewarded with excellent vegetarian food from a changing I-tal menu featuring hearty soups (the pumpkin is absolutely divine), veggie burgers and combo platters anchored by a variety of tofu offerings. Fresh juices or a glass of the homemade aloe wine are a must.

Uvva Restaurant
Almost lost among Ocean Park’s whitewashed villas lies one of San Juan’s most understated culinary treats: an intimate vegetarian-friendly restaurant right on the beach. The menu at this eatery in the Hostería del Mar changes frequently, but tofu, brown rice and onion dishes with a side salad are always there or thereabouts.

Bili
Bili is the recently rebranded restaurant at the Amapola Inn. Offering the island’s finest selection of vegetarian food, it’s also a haven for noncarnivores who’ve grown tired of eating omelets. The yucca salads are good as is the seafood and you can shoot the breeze alfresco as the malecón crowds steam past.

The best vegetarian option in New Kingston, Livity serves up an array of veggie fajitas, soups, salads and tofu dishes. Service can be a little slow, but if you order one of the outstanding fruit juices – try the mango pineapple or the lemonade – and get an outdoor seat, the wait’s easy to bear.

Restaurante Vegetariano
Manage your expectations before you check out this peso place. This is Cuba where vegetarianismo is still in its infancy. Don’t expect nut roast, but you should be able to order something other than the ubiquitous omelette.
