Pancho Villa
If you have long grown bored of lukewarm enchiladas or unpalatable refried beans, this modest place in Rincón’s main square could quite easily reignite your taste buds for all things Mexican. Though the decor’s nothing fancy and the service only so-so, the Rancho Villa delivers the goods where it matters: the food’s damn tasty. Try the house burrito or the crispy chimichanga washed down with a salt-laced margarita and beware the rose-toting mariachis on Friday nights.

Blue Iguana
The Fajardo Inn has two restaurants, but this one is by far the best, with great Mexican fare, sharp service and unbelievably cheap prices (for sizable portions). In the earlier hours it’s a good option for families; later on the pool table and ample bar attracts a drinking crowd. On weekends it’s very popular after 10pm.

Hacienda Don José
Waves lash against the rocks within spitting distance of your pancakes and huevos rancheros, and busy waitresses shimmy around the tiled tables and colorful murals. If your swanky hotel’s all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet has worn you out, drop by here for a little bit of local hospitality.

Chaparritas
Vegetarians might have a hard time finding something to eat here, because Chaparritas puts meat on everything and cooks with a lot of lard, but the food is undeniably hot and tasty when it comes to the table. It’s the usual Mexican burritos, tacos and enchiladas, but presented with flair.

Lolita’s
Lolita’s is 3 miles east of town on the south side of Hwy 3. The Mexican meals are so popular that the owners have moved into a building twice the original size. A soft taco costs $2.50, and many dinners run under $10. Imported Mexican mariachis provide the music.

Pika-Pika
A first-rate Mexican cantina located on Boquerón’s back street, just a short block north of all the commerce on Calle José de Diego. Deep-dish burritos and tacos are savory and can be prepared vegetarian-style.

Paladar Mi Jardín
The rare Cuban menu that offers chicken mole or tacos and quesadillas makes this Mexican place a keeper. Dining beneath the vine-covered trellis in the garden is recommended, as is the house special, fish Veracruz.

El Brocal
Want a nice surprise? Then check out this place, which serves up cheap tacos, quesadillas and a big combo of shrimp cocktail, fish, rice, salad and dessert in a little ranch house. There are porch tables here.

Restaurant Garibaldi’s
If you are really hungry, you might possibly finish one of these burritos by yourself – the Mexican dishes here are impossibly large, but very tasty. Enchiladas, tostadas, tacos and more, served daily.

Taquería Azteca
This unfussy Mexican place near the university does burritos, nachos and empanadas muy rápido with all the right ingredients. A great place to meet tomorrow’s literati.
