Things to do in The East

  1. Surf Center Playa Sur

The sails of windsurfers and kite boarders speckle the horizon here. Novices note that the winds are very strong and challenge even the pros. You can rent windsurf equipment or sign up for courses at the Surf Center Playa Sur, just beyond Hotel Playa Sur Tenerife.

  2. Casa Gladys

Despite the disquieting name, this restaurant on the seafront does not serve cups of tea and poached eggs on toast, but far more exotic fare. The owner is from Venezuela so that country's cuisine is tastily represented, as are spicy Mexican dishes.

  3. Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria

The ornate 1950s Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria sits at the edge of the town centre, overlooking a rocky beach and flanked by a plaza where nine huge statues of Guanche warriors stand guard.

  4. Timón

If you're lucky you may be able to grab one of just two outside tables on a weeny terrace above the thundering surf. You don't have to push the boat out to sample the delicious seafood tapas here.
