La Cuevita
Tucked into a natural cave beside the port, where plants dangle from the ceiling and low lighting creates a cosy atmosphere, La Cuevita serves fresh local seafood, such as tuna, vieja (parrot fish), lapas (limpets), chocos (cuttlefish), along with grilled meats, all served with papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and a tangy red mojo.

La Bodeguilla Juananá
Tucked into the corner of grandly named Plaza Mayor, in front of the yacht harbour, this restaurant is run with passion. The décor has an African theme and the gastro-flair dishes include daily specials like smoked swordfish served with avocado and a sauce made from the sap of canary palms.

Cofradía de Pescadores
Next to the port, with an outdoor terrace, you can dine on catch-of-the-day along with the fishermen - and there's no better recommendation than that. Try the speciality, fritura de pescado (lightly fried seafood), or one of 30 tapas para picar (to taste).

Restaurante Cofradía
This fishing cooperative restaurant is situated in the southwestern corner of the quay. Although the white tablecloths and multilingual menus mean the tourists have arrived, the fish is as fresh as ever. Tuck into a plate of grilled sardines; you'll never open a tin again.

Restaurante Rías Bajas
Within stumbling distance of the Yumbo Centrum, the tank of tentacle-waving crustaceans at the entrance gives it all away: the fish and seafood dishes here have an island-wide reputation. There's a sister restaurant in Urbanisation Meloneras in Maspalomas.

Restaurante Las Nasas
There's a great atmosphere in this former warehouse with its old-fashioned black-and-white interior, jolly model boats, high ceilings and a small walled terrace overlooking the ocean. It's also usually the busiest along this seafood strip; a good sign.

Restaurante Dedo de Dios
A cavernous restaurant hung with ferns in a lovely old building overlooking the beach and the rocky remains of the poor old Dedo. It fills up with large, boisterous families at weekends and has a vast menu of mainly fish and seafood dishes.

Restaurante Marinero Jesse
Fronting the beach, Jesse specialises in paella, fresh seafood and fantastic views. There is also an impressive list of local wines. The atmosphere is casual by day and dressier in the evening, when reservations are usually necessary.

El Refugio
Serving fresh fish and seafood (the restaurant has its own fishing boat), El Refugio is one block up from the waterfront. To get here, follow the sounds of the singing bird, which lives in a cage outside the restaurant.

Enjoying possibly the best location in town, this is a low-key place overlooking the pretty harbour. The menu is appropriately seafood-based, with the obligatory tank of potential dinner mates at the entrance.

Enjoy views of the beach as you savour the freshly caught lubina (sea bass), dorada (sea bream) and merluza (hake). On the roof is a sunny terrace bar selling drinks and ice cream.

Restaurante el Cápita
A slightly smarter proposition than some, with a reasonable menú del día. The fresh fish dishes can't be faulted, though the service may see you twiddling your thumbs when it's crowded.

Restaurante Sol
Located in a simple blue-and-white building fronting the sea. Try the grilled fish or fried baby squid. This place gets packed out at weekends with noisy local families - always a good sign.

Bar-Restaurante El Puerto
Specialising in - what else? - fresh fish, this too-bright (the fluorescent lights lend it a bit of a fast-food air) place by the port is one of the best spots in town to try local delicacies such as grilled peto and medregal (local fish).
