A real gem in this sea of generic high-rise hotels, the Tropicana has a long history and is superbly set on one of the quieter beaches of town. If you don't fancy wandering into town, the hotel's facilities are excellent.
Dating from 1971, this hotel claims to be the first to open here. It is one of the few in this area which has a traditional Canarian look, with wooden balconies, a white stucco exterior and lush, mature gardens. The latter covers some 9,500sq m and features more than 800 varieties of plants and trees (including jacaranda, magnolia and palms) set amidst small pools and fountains. The rooms have an Andalusian look, with terracotta tiles, dark stained-wood fittings and beams and soothing pastel-coloured paintwork. The terraces have wooden and bamboo furniture and overlook the pool with the sea as a backdrop. The bathrooms are small but beautiful, and are adorned with colourful ceramic tiles.
