Villa del Conde Resort & Thalasso

This sprawling hotel is seriously luxurious and deserves its own postcode. The rooms are enormous, with king-size beds, walk-in closets and luxurious bathrooms with double sinks and fluffy white robes. Facilities include six pools, several restaurants and bars, a mini club and a thalassotherapy spa.

One of the latest luxury hotels to open here, Villa del Conde is based on the historic centre of the town of Agüimes: the hotel's main lobby even emulates its neoclassic domed church (complete with peeling plaster effect). The sheer size of the space is awesome, with vaulted domed ceiling, massive bronze-effect columns and arched windows. The rooms are set in the 'village houses' which are all different, as in Agüimes, and delightfully colourful, with pale yellow, dark red, and stone-studded blue paintwork. Lauded over by the massive domed 'church' (only slightly smaller than the original), the buildings centre around a main plaza complete with bandstand and terrace restaurant. It could be like Disneyland, but the architecture is executed so tastefully that it somehow works.
