Lonely Planet review for Isla de Lobos

The bare, 4.4-sq-km Isla de Lobos takes its name from the lobos marinos (sea wolves) that lived there. They were, in fact, focas monje (monk seals), which have since disappeared thanks to the hungry crew of French explorer de la Salle, which ate them to stave off starvation in the early 15th century.

You can go on an excursion to the islet from Corralejo. Once you've disembarked there's little to do but go for a short walk, order lunch at the quay-side chiringuito (kiosk) - reserve when you arrive if you intend to lunch there - and head for the pleasant little beach.

It's a popular bird-watching destination and there are hammerhead sharks in the waters around the island. Surfers often carve up the mean breaks when the waves are pumping.

The cheapest and fastest way to get there is on the Isla de Lobos ferry. Departing Corralejo at 10:00, it leaves the island at 16:00. A minicruise is another option.

Planet Mars meets Alcatraz. Don't go there.

    englishrose77 does not recommend this,

With every fibre of my being I urge you...save your 15 euros. Unless of course you would relish being dumped for 2 hours on a rocky landscape of no real beauty that has no shade and a place that boasts a restaurant which is actually just a serving hatch as the grumpy waiter does not like you to sit in his restaurant, oh no, lest you might use it to escape the 40 degree heat whilst drinking an overpriced fanta naranja. The glass bottom boat ride across is pretty enough, but the wait and subsequent stampede for the return boat after 2 hours of hell is not. I can only assume that nobody else has posted a review because they never made it back.
