Lonely Planet review for Ten Thousand Villages
A fair-trade boutique where purchases support the work of artisans in low-income countries around the world, you’ll find stationery from Bangladesh, baskets from Vietnam and a plethora of hammocks, drums, clothing and unusual handicrafts. Pick up a far more worthwhile Vancouver souvenir than those maple-syrup cookies and confuse everyone back home.

If you LOVE Ten thousand Villages, you will LOVE La Sirena
luchissol recommends this,
In 324 West Hastings Street, Downtown, Vancouver.
I bought a beautiful hand tooled purse I cannot even find in Mexico, I had a great experience buying at La Sirena. It is a store full of surprises! I would definitely recommend this visit. They have one of a kind hand-crafts from different artisans from 8 states in Mexico, the store shines with color from inside out. The recently opened store has all to stand out, every product has a story behind, and the store is populated with art and crafts that hold generations of history and some of the kitsch Mexican style too.
La Sirena Folk Art works with co-ops, and non governmental organizations that promote fair trade and social responsible practices for economic growth in rural and marginal areas in Mexico, so consumers, when buying at La Sirena can make socially responsible purchases. Some of the Organizations they work with are: Fabrica Social, AMSIF, Casa Huichol, Kitzin.
Beside the Store there is the Piche Taco shop, which I found to have the best tacos in town.
So if you are downtown Vancouver, Take a peak!
