  1. A

    Naam

A rare and evocative relic of Kitsilano’s hippie past, this vegetarian restaurant has the feel of a comfy, highly chatty farmhouse. It’s not unusual to have to wait for a table here at peak times, but it’s worth it for the hearty stir-fries, Mexican platters and sesame-fried potatoes with miso gravy. This is the kind of veggie spot where carnivores are also happy to dine. There’s nightly live music, an array of great organic beers and a popular patio – it’s covered, so you can cozy up here with a bowl of broth and still enjoy the rain.

    Foundation

This lively vegetarian (mostly vegan) noshery is where artsy students and chin-stroking young intellectuals like to hang. Despite the clientele, it’s not at all pretentious (apart from the philosophical quotes adorning the walls) and its mismatched Formica tables are often topped with dishes like the giant, finger-licking Utopian Nachos, spicy black bean burgers or hearty house-made curries – called Revolutionary Rations on the menu. Vancouver’s Storm Brewing beers are also served (go for the Scottish Cream Ale).

    Gorilla Food

Like stepping into a shaded forest nook, this smashing little subterranean eatery is lined with woodsy flourishes and the kind of fresh-faced, healthy-living vegans who will make you want to adopt a new lifestyle. Organic raw food is the approach, which means treats such as seaweed wraps and pizza made from a dehydrated seed crust topped with tomato sauce, tenderized zucchini and mashed avocado. Make space for an icy almond shake dessert, and some carrot cake slathered with cashew cream.
